Howdy, I will start by telling you my favorite way of hunting today. There are no seasons or permits, licenses required. This type of hunting requires the stealth, patience and good luck that is needed when we hunt for meat or trophies. My weapon of choice is nothing more than a camera. I started quite accidentaly, my wife and I were out in the Oregon woods hiking, I had a small 35mm camera with us, when we came upon a clearing and behold, approximately 100 yards or so was a herd of Elks, I started to take pictures, the camera being a cheap one, one that sights through the view finder and not the lens, I failed to notice that the lens cap was still on! But I did get that buck fever, I then decided to read up on the subject of Nature Photography and learn about this type of hunting weapon. One thing I did do, was to upgrade to a digital camera, I purchased a small Fuji A400 which I keep in the car at all times (along with a few spare AA batteries), for you never know what wildlife may just show up. I will upload some pics in a few days, I need to retrieve them from my other PC. The following link will take you where you can purchase quality photographic weapons at very reasonable prices & they have a good selection with accesories. I have found an interesting article on my favorite animal to hunt, The Wild Boar! My first hunt was with a 12gauge using older Foster type slugs, quite effective at shorter range. I'll never forget that first hunt, we could SMELL our query well before we saw them! Most animals will flee when they hear/see/smell humans, these guys seemed fearless! I ALWAYS hunted pigs with a buddy, never alone! My last boar adventure was in the Soledad area (Monterey peninsula), there are loads of pigs out there, by that time I had graduated to using either a SW Model 29 or a Ruger SuperBalckhawk both in .44Mag, loaded with a 240gr JSP (Max), I would crawl through the heavy underbrush looking for pigs, a great way to get healthy dose of adrenaline ! my buddy would always back me up with his .338Wmag. To make a long story short, I shot and killed a 218lbs pig who charged me after taking 2 chest hits at less than 30 yards, I continued firing until it slid dead 17ft in front of me, tenacious critters! Almost needed a change of underwear! Well on to the article, enjoy! Feral hog, Wild boar hunting by Rufus HoydHunting through the use of spears and other tools used to be the ancient man's primary way of sourcing food. Today, hunting is still very much alive in the modern society, although it is being for various reasons. One of the top hunting targets for men is the wild boar, a known ancestor of domestic pigs although they look different. Boars are classified as feral hogs, Russian wild boar or hybrids, a mixture of the first two kinds. Boars are called full bloods if they are pure wild boars and standard if they are a result of breeding domestic pigs and pure wild boars. Feral hogs are hogs that have escaped domestication and became wild. The free roam farming, or the practice of branding hogs and releasing them into the open to roam free and breed, is said to be responsible for the existence of feral hogs today. Feral hogs can be found in nine States, with the largest population found in Texas. Texas and other States consider hogs as nuisance animals so hunting rules are very lenient. In fact, hunters are allowed to hunt feral hogs using any kind of weapon or bait, at any time of the day. True Russian boars are said to exist only in Texas and New Hampshire. The increasing population of feral boars is attributed to their ability to reproduce fast, the practice of free ranging husbandry methods and the existence of more water in arid areas. These boars can produce four to six litters depending on their breed and the availability of food in their area. A hunter's success in hunting boars using rifle will depend on the population of the wild boars, the hunter's knowledge of the behavioral patterns of wild hogs, and the use of the right kind of rifle. Feral hogs have keen eye sights and they have a very good sense of smell and hearing. A fully mature feral hog can weigh from 200 to 700 pounds while a wild boar or the Russian boar can weigh up to 400 pounds. Wild boar hunters should consider the kind of gun they are going to use, the gun caliber, the load of the gun which should match their hunting style, the terrain where they expect to encounter the hogs and the range between them and the boars.
