Welcome to our Archery page,
Here, Peter & I, will open a gateway into the ancient world of Archery.
We will provide you with information, articles and links about this great sport and hobby.
Neither of us are anything like the famous archers William Tell or Robin Hood, we can hit an 18" square at 25 yards or so. I do fairly good providing I can get my hands on a LEFTY bow! Peter is quite the marksman with his Barnett Crossbow!
But we have dabbled in this sport like many of you probably have. I maybe proved wrong but I believe that there are more folks that have tried shooting with bows and crossbows than have ever held, much less fired a firearm.
To this day, archery is still offered at many schools throughout our land, it is also a very popular activity at summer camps, clubs like the Boys Scouts/Girl Scouts etc.
Due to our limited knowledge in this field, Peter & I will rely on other expert sources to provide you with the best information that you require. This book will provide you with much info to transform you into a great archer.
Field Archery: A Complete Guide (Hardcover)
The sub-topics that will be found here, will be, History of the bow, Proper shooting techniques, Types of bows/crossbows/arrows/bolts, Archery hunting & fishing, Care of equipment, Choosing the right arrow/bolts and arrowheads, Archery events & competitions, Building your own bow/crossbow & more!
I would like to start by giving you a brief history of Archery.
The definition is:
1. The art, sport, or skill of shooting with a bow and arrow.
2. The equipment of an archer.
3. A group of archers.
A technical term for Archer is: One term for an archer is a toxopholite, which derives from ancient Greek.
The definition for bow is: A weapon consisting of a curved, flexible strip of material, especially wood, strung taut from end to end and used to launch arrows.
Use of these devices, which stores energy & then uses this energy to propel a lethal projectile dates way back to around 40.000B.C.
Our early ancestors in Africa developed the short bow, it gave greater range and was somewhat easier to use than the spear or staff.

The invention of the Bow, not only facilitated hunting, it gave man a way of killing his enemies at greater range and with larger numbers. Armies would have large units of bowmans, that would fire volleys upon a charging foe, literally raining arrows and causing much death and injuries.
Our own native Americans, were some of the finest archers that the world has ever known, once horses were introduced to this continent and were domesticated, some Nations, such as Sioux, Cheyenne, mostly Great plains tribes, produced highly skilled mounted archers, that were able to run down large buffaloes and take them down with a flurry of arrows. They truly deserved respect.
Another land that provided great archers, on foot as well as mounted is Japan. I will give you more info on this at a later date (Soon though!) Japan's Great Archers This link will give you an insight on this "Spiritual" sport and it's history, well worth a look! Here is a great book on Kyudo, this ancient Art. |
